My Juicy Story - Kelvin Dobson

22 December 2008 My Juicy Story - Kelvin Dobson

What got you into juicing and what did you think of it before you got into it?
My sister Kim got me into juicing. We were looking for something to buy my Mother for her Birthday, and Kim found this Juice Mater fella on the web. My initial thought was, well it's something to get I suppose. Then my Mother, Kim and Jess ended up all going to the Juice Master Montenegro retreat in April this year. Well, when they came back, it was "juice this and juice that" which was pretty crazy to me at the time, but that is how i got into it.

What results have you had since you got into juicing?
Well it's been unbelievable really. Being quite a fit person, I was mortified when I fell off my push bike and broke a few things.  This traumatized my system and left me with severe rheumatoid arthritis. I was taking 30 tablets on a Monday and 22 tablets all the other days of the week.

Some were pain killers, some were anti-inflammatory, some were to stop the side affects of the others, some were to put vitamins back into my body. As the more severe drugs were removing the vitamins, some were to settle my stomach as I was feeling sick all the time.  I had blood test every week to see if my kidneys, liver and marrow were still functioning . This was quite a bad time for me.

Since my family have come back from the Montenegro retreat and I have got me juicing for around 4 months, I have reduced my tablets. This wasn't something I did consciously, I missed a time for taking my pills and it wasn't until my next dosage that I realised I had missed my last one.  Then I did do it consciously, I missed some more times, and then some more, until now, I don't take any pain killers, anti-inflammatory and don't take any to settle my stomach.

The only tablets I am taking are Methotrexate on a Monday plus 1 folic acid on other days of the week. Yipeeeeeeeee!! These I am hoping to reduce or finish with altogether on my next trip to the specialist.

How has juicing changed your life?
I know when I finally came to a retreat in September I was asked this by a member of the Juice Master team after sharing my story.  I turned into this big girls blouse and filled up. I am still doing the same, but this time for different reasons.  To go from someone who will have a go at anything, to someone that has to be careful of everything, I can't tell you how it affected me.

Simple things like taking the tops off the milk cartons, undoing jars, lifting and carrying things, shopping bags, shaking hands with friends and the one that kills me was not being able to hold hands in case my children (aged 8 and 9) squeezed, cuddled or play with me. Since I've been juicing I can do almost anything again.  I am still careful, I'm not saying juicing has made everything perfect, but I am saying it has help me get my life back to a point where it's worth living again.

Has juicing had a positive effect on your friends and family?
This is another thing I will find hard to put into words.  The first thing is that I can play and cuddle my children as much as I want (which is all the time!), I can work in our Hotel again and I am back coaching the rugby junior section (under 10's).  Oh and I am also playing golf again now that I can grip the club.  Everything that I used to be able to do I can do again, even if it is to a slightly less energetic pace. Life is really good.

What advice would you give to someone sceptical about juicing?
I would tell them to give it a go, don't put it down until you have tried it. The results could be more than you expect and even if they aren't, you are going to be feeling good about yourself and feel healthier for giving it a go.  If that thats not enough I don't know what is.  What's to be sceptical about?

What's your favourite juice?
The best one? Hard to say I have had that many. I still think the one we had in Turkey with the ginger in was the best. Lemon Ginger Zinger I think its called.
